Note: First published in Tomorrow 8, August 1949, under the title "The Woman on the Stairs." Nothing supernatural in this story: Ruby is in denial about being pregnant, but everyone around her can tell, including the palm reader.
Synopsis: Ruby is determined to never have children, seeing how they suck the life out of other women. A palm reader tells her that a long illness will bring her a stroke of good fortune. It turns out that the palm reader has guessed what Ruby herself is unaware of: she's pregnant.
