April 1962. While the men are all away fighting in the long-running Korean War against the Soviets and Chinese, thirteen women pilots have been selected by NASA for their space programme. Beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, deep in the Puerto Rico Trench north of San Juan, lies a film bucket from a KH-4 Corona spy satellite, which should have been caught in mid-air by a USAF plane but must now be retrieved by the US Navy bathyscaphe, Trieste II. This is not our world. But it very nearly was.
