Note: First published in Gil Blas, May 13, 1884, and signed "Maufrigneuse", this story was later collected in Toine, Paris, Marpon et Flammarion, 1885-1886. Bleiler states in The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, that Artine Artinian who edited the 1955 The Complete Short Stories does not believe this story to be the work of de Maupassant, but that other authorities such as Helmut Kessler in his Maupassants Novellen (1966) disagree.
