Note: This is one of the stories of Ueda Akinari's 雨月物語, Ugetsu monogatari, Tales of Moonlight and Rain.
The original Japanese title of this story, 菊花の約, is transcribed as Kikka no chigiri in the Revised Hepburn notation, and means "the pledge of the chrysanthemum". It is composed of 菊花, kikka "chrysanthemum", の, no, "of" and 約, chigiri, "promise, pledge".
Synopsis: A man has promised to visit a friend on the day of the chrysanthemum festival, September 9th. He finds himself unable to because he has been imprisoned, and kills himself so that his ghost can escape and fulfil the pledge.
