Note: This story first appeared in the February 1st 1846 issue of La Revue des Deux Mondes. It is based on the existence of a "club des Haschischins" founded by Gautier in 1845 in the Parisian Hôtel de Pimodan, and attended to by such writers as Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas and Charles Baudelaire. It was dedicated to the exploration of drug-induced experiences, notably with hashish.
