Note: Original manuscript written in 1923, and first published in 1925. The text is embellished by 15 vignettes and two decorative borders in watercolor washes over ink and pencil. (Hesse had taken up watercolors as a pastime while undergoing psychoanalysis with a disciple of Jung.) In addition to the 1925 publication, there are 42 known handwritten or typed examples of this tale produced by Hesse from the early 1920s through the late 50s.
