Title: The Legion of the Lost Title Record # 1814215
Author: John Creasey
Date: 1943-11-00
Type: NOVEL
Series: Dr. Palfrey
Series Number: 3
Webpages: kirkusreviews.com
Language: English
Note:
  • Non-genre? This one of the early Dr. Palfrey novels may be in the database because the mission is saving scientists--the lost legion, imprisoned in Nazi Europe. In many later volumes it is saving the world from mad scientists.
  • Revised and abridged by the author, 1965 -- as Arrow Books #852, OCLC 18093447 -- followed in the 1974 Walker ed., copyright implies, LCCN 74080973
  • Probably this was the first Dr. Palfrey story published in the US. The first two are not found in automated search of US newspapers 1942 to 1944 (but found in UK newspapers), and WorldCat reports no early edition except that from John Long. Some WorldCat records do report Long as a "London, New York" publisher.
Synopsis: "Norway, Denmark, and then German are portrayed here in the finest and most vivid 'inside Europe' adventures yet published." --publisher advertisements "Mr. John Creasey's Dr. Palfrey and his chums roam occupied Europe in a series of protean impersonations rescuing anti-Fascist scientists from concentration camps. Highly exciting but demands a lot of faith." --UK review by Maurice Richardson, The Observer 1944-01-30 p3 Set "in the battlefields and cities of Nazified Europe; and the hunt for the 'lost legion' of doctors, scientists and nerve specialists takes intrepid Dr. Palfrey and his companions to N, D and finally Berlin. ... each chapter the reader's admiration grows for the underground in the subjugated nations." --US review by H.G.F., The Hartford Courant 1944-12-24 pSM14 "Rescuing Scientists"
