- 15 stories (1896) namely, 12 shared and A Tragedy of the Tides, An Experience of Jabez Batterpole, The Eye of Gluskâp 15 stories (1903) namely, 12 shared and On the Tantramar Dyke, The Hill of Chastisement, Stony—Lonesome In the 1903 "Prefatory Note", Roberts says the new "edition is enlarged by the inclusion of three new stories" (and is illustrated). Newspaper coverage describes it as enlarged, even "nearly double the size" (NY Times 1903-03-07 pBR11). But three stories are dropped, including the last and longest.
- First published in 1896, copyright 1895 by the publisher. 1st ed. shows immediately after the copyright page (quote): Author's Note. Most of the stories in this collection have already appeared in the pages of English, American, or Canadian periodicals. In the 1903 "Prefatory Note", Roberts says that "most ... attempt to present one or another of those problems of life or nature ..."; "others are the almost literal transcript of dreams ..."; "the rest are scenes from that simple life of Canadian backwoods and tide-country ...".
