Synopsis: The story of the life of Supervisor 246, only that's not true, as he and everyone in his society is dead, and know they are in this comedy that takes our world, turns it upside down and shakes it, and lets us see what falls out. As it says in the preface: consider our world and all the technology we have, then put your existence (and other people) inside a computer, where you don't need to eat, or sleep, and can't die again. Now consider that it is literally possible to do (or have done to you) anything that can be perceived by your senses.
