Synopsis:
Alternating between a painter's London studio and "a wild piece of the Cornish coast". " 'Genefer the Innocent', a girl saved from the sea," has limited memory; is considered a witch or mad.
"The idea is suggested that Genefer is ... the reincarnation of a British priestess who, on the same spot in Druidical times, had sacrificed the life of her lover in obedience to the laws of her tribe."
The artist's paintings are distinguished by 'atmosphere' and so is the novel.
