Synopsis: King Eochaid, returning from a raid, finds his wife Edain waiting for him very troubled. She tells her story: while Eochaid was at war he asked Edain to care for his brother Ardan, who was very ill for unknown reasons. Edain, attempting to find out the cause of Ardan's illness, promised him that whatever troubled him, for example a woman, she would do all in her power to make him happy. Ardan then confessed that he was in love with Edain; although unwilling, she kept her promise and arranged a rendezvous with him. There, she found a god who had taken the shape of Ardan; he told her that she had once been his lover and would be again, and asked her to come away with him at once. She, however, replied that she loved Eochaid, and loved him all the more because he was mortal and their love would be brief. At the end of the story, Eochaid tells her she has acted well.
