Synopsis: Tales in a frame story. The girl Flossy Tankleskein is a model for the painter E. Rubens Rose. Cf. The Bubbling Teapot (1886). Following the introduction of characters including paint bogies Carrie (caricature) and Tint, the other 15 chapters are named for colors in the palette: Ultramarine, Terra Verde, and so on to Ivory Black.
Chapter II begins with Flossy doing her flaxen hair and "remembering as she did so that the color on which the Paint Bogy had promised them a story was ultramarine; the word, he said, meant 'over the sea' and the color was the bluest of blue."
