- Suffling notes in the preface that his last work may be "lacking in high invention" (the words of a critic evidently). Here he takes up the challenge sucessfully. --Westminster Review
- "The story hunter gets his tales thruough the medium of what he calls 'brain-ether', a species of thought-reading or brain telegraphy. Dead skulls come under this curious imaginary influence, and the book gives some startling results." --Practical Teacher
- "The 'Story-Hunter' conceives a notion that by hypnotising likely individuals and then compelling them to relate some strange experience, he will be able to get narratives truthful, if not always interesting. ..." --The Spectator The latter is moderately positive, despite story-hunter faux scientific theory of Brain Ether.
