Note: First published as part of the novel (with embedded fairy tales) "Les jeune Américaine, ou les contes marins" (1740), but of NOVEL length nevertheless, as it has 40,000 words. Subsequent adaptations & translations appeared at short fiction lengths. Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's abridged and rewritten version, which appeared in 1756, eventually became the standard text.
