Note: Speculative element: the Master apparently dies and returns to life several times in the novel, and it is revealed that this is a secret art he learned in India.
Before book publication, this novel was serialized in Scribner's Magazine, Novembwr 1888-October 1889.
Synopsis: During the Jacobite rising of 1745, the Durie family hedged its bets by having the two sons each join opposite sides of the conflicts. The elder, known as the Master of Ballantrae, was forced to go into exile while the younger, Henry, inherited the title--but this situation was all wrong and only got worse when the Master secretly returned.
