  • First published as part of the article "Irish Superstitions: Ghosts and Fairies" in the Irish Penny Journal, Volume I No. 21, 21 November 1840. The title "The Fate of Frank McKenna" was given to it when it was reprinted in the 1845 Tales and Sketches.
  • In early editions, "McKenna" was printed with a superscript c that has often been mistaken for an apostrophe, and therefore the name appears as "M'Kenna" in many reprints and secondary sources.
