Note: According to The Abalone King of Monterey by Tim Thomas, this song was written around 1907 by a group of friends including George Sterling, Opal Heron Search (a musician who may have created the overall form of the song, although many others contributed verses), Gelet Burgess, Mary Austin, Sinclair Lewis, Ambrose Bierce, and others not named in this source although they are mostly identifiable from manuscripts. Sterling had a compilation of verses privately printed for his friends in 1920.
