Synopsis: Time travel inventions have been the star of many speculative novels, from The Time Machine, H. G. Wells's wonderful Victorian monster, to Connie Willis's Doomsday Book. What drives writers to use this resource? The answer is simple. Time travel has been and will continue to be an infallible method of presenting conjectural scenarios, since this displacement accentuates the contrasts between the contemporary and the past (or future) so that they are magnified by being reflected in a magic mirror, showing glimpses of alternative realities, imagining possible configurations, and consolidating fiction as an effective strategy for understanding reality.
