Synopsis: Sir Calogrenant, in search of knightly adventures, comes across a wild man herding savage cattle in the forest of Broceliande. The wild man directs him to a marvelous spring. The spring is surrounded by a rim made of a single emerald, and nearby hangs a golden basin; following the wild man's directions, Calogrenant sprinkles some spring water on the rim and immediately an extremely violent storm arises; which, by the grace of God, he survives, only to be attacked and defeated by the knight who guards the spring. He nonetheless is able to return home alive.
