Synopsis: From the first page of the Ballantine first edition: "Kit Kennedy was a stateless man, unwelcome in any area of the "civilized" world. Fortunately for him, a large part of the world still remained uncivilized. In the heart of the Congo, Kit had found friends and peace. From the Africans he loved he had learned the deep satisfaction of mutual respect between man and nature. Kit was one with the world he lived in - and he couldn't risk losing any of it. But he was there only on the sufferance of the Belgian authorities.
So when the Resident Magistrate sent for him to act as guide to a semiofficial safari, Kit had no alternative but to go along with it - even though the purpose of the safari was mysterious and it members an oddly assorted group of people unlikely to have any sane objective in common.
But even Kit, long since habituated to the shocks that Africa could produce was to find himself awed and fascinated by what they found."
