Year Title
1943Letter refers to the error on the December issue of Unknown Worlds in which the story "Transients Only" appeared with Malcolm Jameson's byline on the cover, while the name "Mary MacGregor" (the maiden name of Jameson's wife) appeared in the table of contents. Jameson was a very frequent contributor to Unknown Worlds and it's possible that "Transients Only" was his story, under the pseudonym of his wife's name. The letter in the February issue appears under the name "Mary MacGregor" and appears to double down on the idea that Jameson's wife wrote the story, complaining, "I know darn well I don't want my first and maybe only story to go down the chute as just another Jameson yarn." The fact that the magazine's only acknowledgement of the error is the letter itself, accompanied by the wry headline "We wuz wrong--and she wuz robbed!" may be clues that the letter is not an official correction but a joke. Readers from that time may have guessed from the mock-indignant tone of the letter that it was written by Jameson pretending to be his wife. "Transients Only" is indeed the first and only story to appear in Unknown Worlds by this Mary MacGregor. According to descendants of Malcolm Jameson and Mary MacGregor Jameson, there is no evidence from family letters or other lore that Mary Jameson ever wrote stories.
