Note: According to Mary Gnaedinger in the January 1950 issue of "Fantastic Novels", A. Merritt modified "The Dwellers in the Mirage" for its 1941 appearance in "Fantastic Novels" by replacing the "happy" ending dictated by the initial publisher with the more ambiguous ending he originally intended. According to Tuck, the original ending was first published as a separate item in the fanzine Bizarre, January 1941.

Synopsis: From the back cover of the Avon 1976 printing: Angry warrior, modern man - Leif Langdon was suddenly ripped from the 20th century and plunged into the ancient world of The Mirage. But his entrance into this awesome land awakened the slumbering Dwayanu, who in this strange incarnation was also Lief. This, two-men-in-one battle with the beautiful witch-woman Lur and the ethereal beauty Evalie for the glory of the Mirage.
