Synopsis: Publisher's description: "A boy and his mother move to the kingdom of Chaan. They learn many lessons about oneness and individuality and in the end they choose the harmony of the East and accept the restrictions as well as the warmth of belonging." From the dust jacket flap: "John Hastings was born in India and he had always felt that he partly belonged to the East so he was thrilled when his mother decided to work as a doctor in the Kingdom of Chaan. Unlike the other kids at the mission school he wanted to get right inside, to become part of the lives of the Chaanians. Soon John was 'in' with a vengeance. He made friends with Ajo, his astrological twin, and through him met his uncle, a magician who was trying to find the Four-Jewelled Crown, the luck of the kingdom, which had been lost for many generations. His adventures began when he discovered he could journey between the worlds. He became Varuna, the time-traveller, lives among the mages of the mysterious city of Andarapura, encounters its Golden Queen and finally becomes the hero of two worlds when he saves Andara from invaders and Chaan from foreign exploitation. Through Ajo and his family he finds out, too, about the Chaanish society and religion - he and his mother take their places in the family as 'elder brother' and 'honoured mother', learns about the Golden and Silver Worlds, that 'oneness' can take the place of individualism and that all life and all society is interdependent. Some of the lessons are hard, always he will retain a little of the independence of the Westerner, but in the end both John and his mother choose the harmony of the East and accept the restrictions as well as the warmth of belonging."
