Note: First published in 1896 serial editions Jul/Aug to Oct/Nov: [a] African Review, UK monthly magazine (4?) [b] US newspapers, Sundays 1896-08-02 to -10-18 (12) [c] Canada newspaper The Weekly Gazette (Montreal), Saturdays 1896-08-15 to -10-24 (11) [a] SFE3 states "first appeared 27 July-24 October 1896 African Review". Those dates are Monday and Saturday. They may be publication dates for issues sometimes called July to October, or August to November. (The magazine may not be dated by month officially. The forthcoming "New Year's number", rather than December or January, is mentioned in late December 1895 newspaper notices.) (Haggard may be affiliated with the magazine. One 1896 item notes that he has a work to appear in The African Review.) [b] Philadelphia Inquirer, Atlanta Constitution, and San Francisco Chronicle serials (viewed online) appear to contain identical text, with a common header illustration and synopsis in the Philadelphia edition only. The Philadelphia contains illustrations by Alfred Brennan (stated 1896-07-30 p4 in promotion of the forthcoming 12-week series), as does the Atlanta (both viewed online). The San Francisco contains illustrations by a different artist (apparently unsigned). [c] Unillustrated (viewed online)
