1947Translated by Georges Charbonnier and André Fréderique This story is in fact a tale by count Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué, "Eine Geschichte vom Galgenmännlein", published in 1810, and included in Ann Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho (chapter XXXVII). The novel was translated from the English into French in 1947. The tale was later included in Jacques Van Herp's anthology L'Angleterre fantastique de Defoe à Wells, 1974, and credited to "Ann Ward Radcliffe".
