Both sources state that this translation first appeared in the February 1981 issue of Omni (the story appeared under a different form of the author's name).
Synopsis: Society has become very rigid with punishment meted out for the slightest infraction. A common punishment is to turn a person, cat or dog into a “pillar” that's rooted into the ground. The person is still alive but soon changes into a plant.
