Note: Not a speculative story; the corrupting power of money in this story is metaphorical.
Synopsis: In a small village in the Pyrenees, an artist buys a house, paying with a check for 30,000 francs, telling the owner to take it to a bank in the city to get the money. The locals don't understand checks or banks, so they steal the book of blank checks, which they think are each worth 30,000, and take them all to the city, acting the whole while as if they're enormously rich.
