Published in the US monthly St. Nicholas XXV:4 p272-75 (February 1898) as the last in a three-part serial there styled '"Just So" Stories' (but 'The "Just-So" Stories' in other instalments), with illustrations by Oliver Herford, without subheading, opening "Now this is the last tale and it tells how the Rhinoceros got his wrinkly skin:"

The book is illustrated by Kipling whose full-page drawings are accompanied by very long captions that amount to a significant expansion of the text.
