Welcome!

Hello, ElleKayEm, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Stonecreek 04:47, 6 September 2018 (EDT)

Fischer error

Hello, thank you very much for finding this error. It's not so easy to differentiate between same-named authors, so errors like these are bound to happen. Thanks again! (and note that I have renamed the two authors, as this Steven Fischer can claim to be the true one). Stonecreek 04:55, 6 September 2018 (EDT)

We go by how the author is credited in a book/magazine so when someone mispells, we record as is and pseudonym. Let me check how the name is credited in both publications and I will either update or variant - whatever is needed. Thanks for finding these! Annie 15:30, 1 November 2019 (EDT)

It was a typo!.--Dirk P Broer 16:54, 1 November 2019 (EDT)
Team effort - I confirmed that the second record that was there was a typo as well and fixed it earlier today as well. :) Annie 17:01, 1 November 2019 (EDT)

Reprints

When the stories are reprinted, they need to be merged with their other versions. The easiest way (when starting from a publication) is to use the "Check for Duplicate Titles" link - it is on the left menu. Then you decide which of the other details to keep - date, length, notes and so on. :) For example for here, the find duplicate would lead to this[ - which shows nothing because I merged them (thanks for finding these!) :) You have similar menus on the author level and on each title level. Pseudonyms

After an author name is made a pseudonym/alternative name for another one, we need to also shift their books to the canonical author page. This is done by a variant where the canonical name is used as an author name of the parent. Would you like to do that for the pseudonym you just created? Let me know if you need a complete step by step or if you want me to do it and post here the steps after that for next time. Annie 20:49, 23 November 2019 (EST)

I think I better let you do it, and see the steps for next time. Thank you! ElleKayEm 16:06, 24 November 2019 (EST)
You start with the title that is under the pseudonym. In this case this one. Locate the "Make This Title a Variant" link to the left. It opens a page that has 2 options. If the title already exists under the canonical name, use the ID in option 1 and submit it with the button there. If it does not, go to Option 2 and use the canonical name in the place of the author. Then press "Create New Parent Title". When approved, it will show up on the canonical name page: here. Let me know if you have any questions. Annie 16:13, 24 November 2019 (EST)
Ok, so in this case, you did option 2 since the title under the pseudonym was only there, right? ElleKayEm 21:03, 24 November 2019 (EST)
Yep. That creates the new title when approved and links them as a parent and a variant. Annie 21:16, 24 November 2019 (EST)

Nice for What

We go by the title page in the magazine even if it is misspelled (we make pseudonyms when that happens). As we have a Primary Verifier (magazine in hand), I pinged him to check this credit. When you find one of those and the book/magazine is PVd, the policy is to check with them before the change is submitted. I will hold the change for a few days until the PV has a chance to look at it and respond. :) Annie 21:44, 30 November 2019 (EST)

Ah, sorry for changing in without checking. My submission is how it is spelled in the ebook version, but I can't say for the physical copy. ElleKayEm 12:49, 1 December 2019 (EST)
Mention in the notes when you are working from the e-copy - the site is easy to fix, the ebook is easier than the printed but generally does not get fixed after it is out so the two editions usually do match. I would have approved and done a post-notification (just in case) if I knew you are working from the e-copy. :) Let's give it a few days anyway as we started it. Annie 15:16, 1 December 2019 (EST)

A few small things for this one:

  • Capitalization - we have house rules for that so "all" needs to be capitalized :)
  • The Title record will become part of the yearly record so adding the links for individual issues there does not make sense.

I've changed all to All in all titles and removed the link from the title Note (it is still in the Publication note). I also rolled the title into the yearly record while I was editing anyway. Thanks for adding it! Annie (talk) 19:50, 14 November 2022 (EST)

I appreciate the notes. I often wonder what should be title specific or publication specific. ElleKayEm (talk) 16:38, 16 November 2022 (EST)
Magazines and Fanzines are a bit special - as the title record (which gets the type EDITOR - the only of our container titles which does not match the publication type) will (or can) belong to all the issues by the same editor in that year, notes for the specific issue go into the publication even if they would usually make more sense on the title level. So if you are adding magazines/fanzines, all notes for the specific issue go into the pub notes (so if we have a print, ebook and webzine as some magazines do and they share some links, they get added in all of them). If you are adding/editing books, notes and links about the text itself go into the title note/links and only specific notes for that specific printing/edition go into the pub note. Hope that helps a bit. Annie (talk) 17:09, 16 November 2022 (EST)
Thanks, that clears up my puzzlement! ElleKayEm (talk) 19:31, 16 November 2022 (EST)
