Welcome!

Hello, HardyK, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 04:15, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Image file exceeding the standard limit

This image file exceeds the ISFDB standard of 600 pixels tall. It will have to be resigned and then replaced. You should have received a warning at the time of the upload that it exceeded the standard. 04:18, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Improper image file uploads

This file, this one, and this file were improperly uploaded. You must use the link provided on the publication record to upload a cover image of that publication. This means you must first add the publication to the database. Once you've read this message, let me know so that I can delete these files from the database.

I have accepted the submission adding this publication and this one. Now use the "Upload cover scan" links and follow the directions. The file can be no larger than 150 kb, and the image can be no more than 600 pixels tall. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 04:22, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for welcome. You can delete the three files from the database. I will upload new versions. I want to complete some records like Alien Contact and Shayol. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by HardyK (talkcontribs) .
Files deleted. Thanks. Mhhutchins 06:56, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Novel content records

When adding a publication typed as NOVEL, do not create a content record for the novel. The system does that automatically. Doing so creates a publication with two content title records along with a duplicate title record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 07:24, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. HardyK 07:29, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

But I don't understand a detail: When the system create the content record for the novel automatically, how can it know the page number of the beginning of the novel? In this case it is page 19.

Sorry, I'm absolute beginner. HardyK 15:24, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

It doesn't know the page number automatically. You have the option to go back and add the page numbering after the record is in the database. You'll find that's easier than having to create a content record for every NOVEL you enter into the database. In most cases, when there are no more contents contained in the publication other than the novel, the NOVEL content record isn't displayed, so its useless to enter its starting page number anyway. Mhhutchins 17:06, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
I understand. Thank you very much. HardyK 17:23, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Alien Contact, Nummer 37

Hello, I've put your submission regarding this issue on hold. First, note that it's ISFDB etiquette to notify the Primary Veririer(s) (there can be up to 5 PVs) of the changes you intend to make. In this case, you should notify Stonecreek. Second, I was wondering about the interview of Gerd Rottenecker. This person is not present is the db so what's the reason of his interview? If he's not an author or an artist (i.e. having not vocation to be listed in the ISFDB), the INTERVIEW-type record should be replaced by an ESSAY-type record. Thanks. Hauck 17:07, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm a beginner here. I understand the etiquette and will respect it. The user Stonecreek is in Germany. Is it okay to write to him in German? - Gerd Rottenecker is one of the editors of a large german fantasy edition (Excalibur at Knaur, a large paperback publisher), but it is okay to replaced by an ESSAY-type record. I will regard this for comming entries. HardyK 17:32, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
Normally we (even frenchmen like me) use english as a common tongue, even for communication between nationals (it allows others to participate). Just drop a line like "Hello, I've added contents to your verified publication". Regarding the interview, I've made the changes, the result is here. There is one last thing, the new essay is bylined "Felix Darwin" a pseudonym of Hannes Riffel, so a new variant record should be created in order to "void" Felix Darwin's page here and "transfer" all the works on Riffel's page here. This is done by going at title level here, using the "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work" hyperlink and entering the requisite data (here the canonical name -Hannes Riffel-) on the bottom part. Don't hesitate to ask if you encounter problems. Hauck 17:50, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. I will practise with new entry of other Alien Contact issues next time. HardyK 18:03, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Utopolis

I changed the publication type of this record from NOVEL to OMNIBUS. If a novel is reprinted with one or two bonus stories, the publication can be typed as NOVEL. But in this case, the number of stories and the substantial number of pages would make this an OMNIBUS, which is a publication which contains a previously published NOVEL, COLLECTION, ANTHOLOGY or NONFICTION. BTW, you'll have to enter the page number where the novel starts now that I've accepted the submission. :) Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:59, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

One other thing: I merged the new title record for the novel of Utopolis with the one that was already in the database. This isn't done automatically by the system, so must be done manually by an editor. Mhhutchins 19:01, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

I added the page number of the novel. Thank you! HardyK 19:08, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
I have another book from Garrett P. Serviss, that contains the Novel "Edison's Conquest of Mars" and the Novella "The Moon Metal" (and two essays). Is this also an OMNIBUS? HardyK 19:28, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes, that would be entered as an OMNIBUS. Be sure to enter content records for all contents, even the novel. Don't create a content record for the omnibus. Just like novels, that is done automatically. Mhhutchins 19:42, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Rumble Tumble

The ISBN given in this record isn't a valid number. Please check it against the publication. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:46, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Also, when entering a publication for a translated title, you shouldn't enter the title into a series. Because the translated title will be varianted to the title of the original language (which probably already is in a series), it will conflict with the ISFDB standard of not entering variants into series. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:48, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

I changed the ISBN (it was false on the cover, right in the book). Can you please delete the series entry of Rumble Tumble and Wilder Winter, and make it to variants? Thank you. HardyK 06:41, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
Why are all my uploaded covers not visible in the db? I hope, I haven't done anything wrong. HardyK 07:01, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
Regarding your uploaded covers: uploading a cover image always requires two steps, and you probably didn't do the second one. First you upload the image into the wiki using the "Upload cover scan" link in a publication record. After the upload the second step is to copy the URL of the uploaded image (not the one of the wiki page of the image), edit the publication and paste the URL into the "Image URL" field. Example: you uploaded this cover: http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Image:PRRRHDNBRL2002.jpg. You'll find a link "Version in höherer Auflösung‎" on that page. Right-click on that link and choose "Link-Adresse kopieren", or click it and then copy the URL from your browser's location bar. That's the one to use for the "Image URL" field. Thank you for information. I'm learning ... How can I find my yesterday uploaded cover scans? HardyK 23:19, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Here's a link for the file list. It's chronologically listed. You can find your uploads by looking down the "User" column. Mhhutchins 00:20, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, the covers are online now. HardyK 13:01, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Alien Contact 9: titles of interior art

Hi Hardy, welcome here and thanks for contributing! :) Regarding "Alien Contact, Nummer 9": you have entered the titles for this and this INTERIORART record misspelt as "untiteled (Alien Contact, Nummer 9)". The correct spelling is "untitled", but you should probably rename them to "Alien Contact, Nummer 9" (without the "untitled"). See chapter General contents -> Title -> Artwork on the help page. Quote from there: "Interior art should have the same title as the fiction or essay it is associated with. If it is independent of other content, and has no apparent title or caption, give it the title of the publication in which it appears, disambiguating if necessary. [Note: occasionally a work may actually be titled "Untitled" which can correctly be given as the title of the work in the ISFDB record]." This means you should use "untitled" only if the artwork has the title "untitled" in the publication. Jens Hitspacebar 21:34, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

I changed the artwork entries. But I need help for the hierarchy in the magazine entries. I don't know how to enter the data for the volume. Here you see "Alien Contact, Nummer 9 (1991)" and in the next line "Alien Contact - 1992 (1992)". How can I change it in the correct way? I want to enter all the 42 issues of Alien Contact. Thank you! HardyK 23:29, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't know how to do that either (I'm not experienced with editing magazines which have such an issue grid), therefore I have just asked the question on the help desk page. Jens Hitspacebar 14:46, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Ok, according the the answer on the help page (and without having done it myself so far) it looks like that's the way to do it:
1. Change the title of the title record "Alien Contact, Nummer 9" (not the publication record for "Alien Contact, Nummer 9") to "Alien Contact - 1991".
2. Use "Add new magazine" to enter a new issue, for example for "Alien Contact, Nummer 8", and enter all data.
3. After submissions 1 and 2 have been approved by a moderator, go to "Advanced Search" and search for the two titles used in step 1 and 2. These are the ones you want to merge into 1 title record. In this example you search for "Alien Contact, Nummer 8" as Title, choose OR, enter "Alien Contact - 1991" as the next Title ", choose AND, and enter "EDITOR" as Title Type. You should see 2 results (or more, depending on what you really searched for). Check the two checkboxes for the EDITOR results of "Alien Contact - 1991" and "Alien Contact, Nummer 8". Click "Merge", review the conflicts shown on the next page very carefully and choose the appropriate radio buttons for the values you want to keep (for example "Alien Contact - 1991" as title_title).
I hope it works :) Jens Hitspacebar
You can also use the "Show All Titles" at the editor's page and merge from here (both titles should be located close to each other). Hauck 15:52, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
You update and then merge the EDITOR record for the magazine. This is a specialized title record for periodical publications (typed as MAGAZINE or FANZINE) that is similar to the title record for book publications typed as NOVEL, COLLECTION, etc. If there is already an annual EDITOR record for the year of the periodical then you don't have to update the new EDITOR record. Just merge them and choose to retain the annual title field and the series (magazine) field. It is not necessary to create an annual record for some publications. Just placing the EDITOR record into a series automatically displays a link on the magazine grid for the publication record. I personally only create annual EDITOR records when there are three or more issues in any given year. The purpose of merging EDITOR records into annual groupings was to relieve the impact such titles would have on the editor's summary page. Imagine thirty plus years of monthly editor records for John Campbell's Astounding / Analog! Mhhutchins 18:20, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

CHAPBOOK

For ISFDB purposes, a publication is typed as a CHAPBOOK based solely on its content, not its physical form. A publication containing a single work of SHORTFICTION (fiction of less than 40,000 words) or a single POEM is typed as CHAPBOOK, regardless of its binding. Works of nonfiction, regardless of their length or binding, are typed as NONFICTION. This 41-page publication is correctly typed as NONFICTION because it is published as a standalone work. If it were published as a content in a MAGAZINE, NOVEL, ANTHOLOGY, COLLECTION or NONFICTION, it would be typed as ESSAY. Mhhutchins 02:12, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Publication Formats

You have chosen "A4" and "A5" as the publication format for several items in this series. That designation is usually reserved for periodicals. Please see this section of the Help pages to determine the best publication format for these publications. Mhhutchins 02:16, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

SF Personality

You've designated these publications as both a title series and a publication series. Although this is possible, it's quite unlikely to be both.

I'm going to be going on vacation for the next 10 days, so I may not be around to get back with you on these last three posts. If you need to get another moderator's response before my return, please post a message on the ISFDB:Moderator noticeboard linking back to these posts. Mhhutchins 02:22, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

It was the intension to designate it both. SF Personality is a title series vol 1-24 (with the numbers at the cover).
Vol 1-9 is a fanzine published by myself, besides other fanzines I not put in the database.
Vol 10-24 is the same title series, but also a publication series at Shayol.
So I will delete the publication series entry from Vol. 1-9. I don't know an other way to show this fact.
I'm also in vacation the next two weeks. I wish you a nice time. HardyK 09:03, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
I deleted the PUB SERIES entry for vol 1-9. I think this way will show the database the PUB SERIES at Shayol correctly. HardyK 10:17, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi, you also designated the first volumes as fanzines: as they may be considered as fan publications, they are not magazines, instead they are NONFICTION titles (analogous to Starmont Reader Guides or publications by Galactic Central). I'll change the lot. Thanks, Christian Stonecreek 03:41, 10 April 2018 (EDT)

Der Herr vom ander(e)n Stern

Hi, You verified the anthology Utopolis; and there's some confusion as to whether the story "Der Herr vom..." is spelled andern or anderen in different publications. Could you look again at the anthology and confirm how it is spelled there? Thanks --Vasha77 07:20, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
