Welcome!

Hello, Voxaquila, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 22:16, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Linking uploaded cover images to the publication record

Thanks for uploading cover images to the ISFDB wiki. The next step is to link those images to the records of the books for which these are the covers. As the instructions (step 6) explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 20:41, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft

Your submission adding the contents of this publication was accepted, but all of the content records will have to be corrected. There should be a space after an initialed period is all author credits in the ISFDB, regardless of how it may appear in the actual publication. I'll do that for you, and then merge the records with those that are currently in the database. Please remember this for future submissions. Also, if you have a copy of the publication please add the page numbers to the contents and do a primary verification of the record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 18:10, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Emergence

I accepted the submission adding this publication to the database, but there are several things which will need to be corrected. I will list them below and ask that you update the record to comply with ISFDB standards (those standards are on the Help pages which are linked in the Welcome section above).

  • Title field: Title should use standard capitalization rules. The only reason for capitalizing every letter in a title is when it is clearly an authorial choice, and not an editorial or designer choice.
  • ISBN/Catalog # field: Amazon's ASIN is not an ISBN or catalog number. It should be removed from this field. Editors have the option to add it to the Note field.
  • Page count field: Ebooks shouldn't have a page count unless it is a PDF formatted publication. Kindle ebooks don't have "pages" (they're formatted by the user), so this field should be blanked.
  • Price field: The list price according to the Amazon listing is $2.99.
  • Publication date field: Should be "2013-03-13" according to the Amazon listing.
  • Image URL: You linked to the image on the Amazon listing page for the Kindle edition. You can get a "clean" version of this image by clicking on the image linked below this image. The URL of that image should be entered into the ISFDB record
  • Content: You credited the SHORTFICTION record to "Gary Frye".

Let me know if you need assistance on making these changes. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 23:28, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

I've made the changes as outlined above, as it seems you've yet to find your talk page. Mhhutchins 07:24, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

A Mountain Walked

This book only recently appeared, as far as I know from correspondence with one of the contributors. Where did you get the March 2014 publication date? Mhhutchins 20:31, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Just a typo.Voxaquila.
Please make the correction if you can confirm the publication date. The publisher's website gave the date as August 2014. Mhhutchins 23:07, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Grimscribe's Puppets

The submission adding contents to this publication was accepted, but you made an error common to new editors. You overwrote an existing content record with a new one, changing the record for "The Human Moth" by Kaaron Warren into one for "The Lord Came at Twlight" [sic] by Daniel Mills. This could have done some damage to the record if it had been either a parent or variant title appearing in another publication. (I checked, it didn't.) In the future, use the "Remove" function to replace a content with another one. I saw no reason why this had to be done in the first place, since you added another record for "The Human Moth" in the same submission.

Some questions: Is the spelling of "The Lord Came at Twlight" correct? Is the capitalization of "THE XENAMBULIST: A Fable in Four Acts" authorial or editorial? In other words, do you believe it was a choice of the author or the book's designer? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 22:49, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Uh-oh. Your overwrite of the record did create a rather enormous error. The original record (for "The Human Moth") was attached to an award record, a nomination for a 2013 Aurealis award. Now the nomination has been given to "The Lord Came at Twilight". After you've read this let me know so that I can make the correction. It's going to take a few complex submissions to straighten out, so I'll do it for you. Mhhutchins 22:55, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm going to have to go ahead and make the changes just so I don't forget about doing it later. I'll change "Twlight" to "Twilight" and move the award back to the correct record. Mhhutchins 03:07, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Oy vey. Thank you for your patience with me sir. VoxAquila

Forthcoming publications

Re this record: Ordinarily we don't create publication records if we're uncertain of the publication date. We usually try not to go beyond 90 days, since so many factors can affect several details about the actual publication. Do you have information about this book's publication date? If not, you must be able to follow through on ensuring that the data in this record is accurate. Mhhutchins 22:23, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

I don't have the publication date. Go ahead and drop this one. Voxaquila
I've changed the publication date to "9999" which is displayed as "forthcoming" since I could find nothing on the publisher's website about the anticipated publication date. Mhhutchins 23:17, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Alice Walks

Re this record: I added the currency symbol to the Price field (assuming it's in US dollars). Also, I was unable to find anything on the publisher's website about the cover art credit. Can you give me a link to that source? This is the first record in the db for "Steve Santiago". Thanks. 22:32, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

A Head Full of Ghosts

I had to reject the submission to create a publication record for this title since it's more than 6 months in the future. There are too many things that could change in the data about this publication until it eventually appears. (Also, you didn't give the currency symbol in the Price field, and William Morrow is now an imprint of HarperCollins so their books should be entered as "William Morrow / HarperCollins".) Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Changing a title record

I see that you added a new content record for "Toll Booth" in this record and removed the old one which was identical excepted for the length designation. You could have clicked on the link to the story's title record and then edited the title's STORYLEN field, changing it to a novella ("nv"). The original record will now have to be deleted from the db since there are now two records for the same title. I'll do that. Mhhutchins 16:30, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Reminder about currency symbol

Because the ISFDB has records for international publications, it's important that the price field reflect the currency as well. I've added "$" to several of your recent submissions (as noted above). Thanks for keeping this in mind for future submissions. Mhhutchins 18:44, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Also, most ebook formats do not have "pages", so the Page Count field should be blank. The only exception is PDF formatted ebooks. I've move the "print length" to the Note field of this record. Mhhutchins 18:47, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

The Witch of the Wood

I had to remove the link to the cover image you uploaded for this publication, because it was uploaded incorrectly. You must use the link provided in the publication record to upload the cover image, so that means you can't upload the cover image file until after the publication record has been created. Compare the file you uploaded with this one uploaded by another user. You'll see that the file has no "fair use" license tag (required for copyright purposes), there is no link back to the publication record, the file name doesn't match the tag of the publication record, and there is no link to the artist's wiki category. All of this is done automatically when you use the link labeled "Upload cover scan" on the publication record. Also, the file you uploaded is of rather poor quality. Is it possible to upload a better one (perhaps this one)?

One last thing: it appears you entered the synopsis in the Note field and not the Synopsis field. Mhhutchins 18:57, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you! Okay, how does it look now? User:Voxaquila
Looks great. Now all you have to do is link it to the publication record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:30, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Sea of Blood

I don't think the cover image you uploaded for this publication has been finalized. It doesn't show title or author credit. That's another reason why we don't create records with an indefinite publication date, as I stated above. Please keep an eye on this record so that you can confirm the final cover art. Working from secondary sources can be tricky, and I advise all new editors to stick with adding books-in-hand until they're comfortable enough with the entry standards to venture out into uncertain territory. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 22:19, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Lucky's Girl

Re this record: according to the Amazon listing, the book is 8 inches tall, thus making it a trade paperback and should be entered as "tp" in the ISFDB record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:22, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Also, I could find nothing other than a rudimentary page for this publication on the publisher's website. No ISBN, no price, no page count, and nothing about the title series "Singularity". One last thing, if you copy some other party's synopsis of a work, they should be credited in the Synopsis field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:27, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguating generic titles

Titles such as "Introduction", "Afterword", "Author's Note", "Preface", etc. should be disambiguated by adding the title of the container parenthetically. I've done that for you in this publication. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:18, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

"pb" vs. "tp"

I changed the pub format of this record from "pb" to "tp" based on the dimensions given in the Amazon listing (as 9" tall.) Mhhutchins

Stories in The King in Yellow

Is there a compelling reason to create a series for the stories in this collection? Do they share common characters or settings, or otherwise related, which would normally be reasons to consider individual stories as part of a series? Mhhutchins 17:00, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

A number of writers have been building a shared-world using the King in Yellow stories as their basis. Check out the entry for Joseph Pulver, Sr. VoxAquila. The stories themselves have a common element, the King in Yellow play.
Submission accepted. Thanks for the response. Mhhutchins 23:43, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Rumbullion by Molly Tanzer

Submission adding this publication was accepted, but several changes were made based on various sources.

The date was changed from 2014 to 2013-10-28, based on the Amazon listing. The "liminal libations" were removed from the titles of the pieces as they appear to be interstitial ("liminal") material or recipes ("libations") and not the stories themselves. The title was also changed based on the OCLC record which records titles from the title page. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 03:32, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for clearing it up! Voxaquila

The Visible Flith

This isn't a NOVEL, but a novella-length publication, so it should be typed as CHAPBOOK, with a SHORTFICTION content. I'll fix the record. (And add the month of publication which was given in your source.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:34, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

And change the title from The Visible Flith to The Visible Filth. !!! Mhhutchins 18:35, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Right-o! Voxaquila

Cult of the Dead and Other Weird and Lovecraftian Tales

Hello, I've approved your submission but trimmed the synopsis (a bit too self-serving). As it's a COLLECTION, you should enter its contents (the cover will be a bonus). I've also changed the price form "20.00" to "$20.00" (damm expensive for a pb!).Hauck 15:53, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Okay.

Improper file upload

I'm going to have to delete this file. It was uploaded directly to the server so it lacks the prerequisite license and other data that is automatically generated when a file is uploaded correctly. It also exceeds the ISFDB standard for cover images: the file can not be more than 150 kb and the image can not be more than 600 pixels tall.

You must first create the publication record, and once that has been submitted and moderated, you use the link "Upload cover scan". Please acknowledge reading this message so that I can delete the file.

Here is the publication record. Now you can proceed to upload the cover image. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:45, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

I'll wait for Amazon to upload the cover.Voxaquila
I've also deleted some images that were uploaded outside our procedure (and were too large, IIRC). Hauck 02:26, 21 September 2017 (EDT)

The Two Sams

There are several things wrong with this record and I ask that you make the corrections to get experience in editing records.

  • Date field should be 2011-12-06, based on the date provided by the source you've given. Amazon corroborates this date.
  • Price field should be "$2.99". Because this is an international database, editors must supply the currency of the price.
  • Catalog ID field should be blank. The number you've given is the Amazon ASIN which is their identifying number, not a catalog number. This field should only be used for the publisher's catalog number or the ISBN. According to the Amazon "Look Inside" the ISBN is 978-1-58767-293-4. Please enter this number to the field and give Amazon as the source in the Note field.
  • Page Count field should be blank for ebooks which have formats other than PDFs. Otherwise, the number of pages is determined by the reader, not the publisher.

It would have also been better to clone the print edition of this collection so that the contents could be imported into the ebook record. I've done that for you. I've also added a link to the cover image on Amazon. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 23:55, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

It's fixed. Voxaquila
Not entirely. I've added the ISBN and gave the source. Mhhutchins 01:47, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you.Voxaquila

Dancy Flammarion

I'm holding your submission to make "Dancy Flammarion" into a subseries of a new one titled "Deep Time". Do you know of any other works by the author that are not in the Dancy Flammarion series but are part of the super-series? Otherwise, I'm not sure if it's necessary to create a super-series. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:11, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

The two Deacon Silvey/Chance Matthews books are part of the same universe.Voxaquila

The Strange Dark One

I accepted the submission to add the cover artist (incorrectly entered as "Jeffery") and the contents to this record, but wasn't able to confirm the change based on your source given as the publisher's website. If your source for the contents was another one, please provide that info in the record's Note field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:07, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

I was able to see the contents listed in Amazon's Look Inside, so I will give them as the source. Mhhutchins 22:10, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

What was your source for the price and publication date? Neither are listed on the publisher's website (or I couldn't find it.) According to Amazon, the book was published on November 15, 2012 with a list price of $14.99. Mhhutchins 22:17, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

From the Amazon page, I must have misprinted the date. I see I listed the discount price rather than the cover price. Voxaquila
Please correct the record when you get a chance. Be sure to give the source for your data every time you create a record for a book that's not in your hand. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:28, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Done.Voxaquila

Monstrous Aftermath

Re this publication: it's unnecessary to provide the URL of the source if it's Amazon. If a record has an ISBN, it is automatically linked to its Amazon listing (and others) in the "Other Sites" menu. Just state "Data from Amazon.com" and that should be sufficient. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:12, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks.Voxaquila

I accepted the submission to add the contents, but you didn't give the source. (Amazon doesn't have a Look Inside for this book so it can't be the source.) I keep harping on sourcing because it should be something natural, that you don't even have to think it about. Sourcing data for non-verified publication records is the single greatest thing that maintains the integrity of the database. Mhhutchins 16:14, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

I understand. I got the table of contents from the author's blog -http://lovecraftianhorror.blogspot.com/2014/09/monstrous-aftermath.html. Voxaquila

It's not just for me. It should be part of the record for the db users. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:42, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

The Dark Eidolon

Please confirm the title of the introduction in this publication. According to the Amazon Look Inside it's titled "Introduction" so it should be entered as "Introduction (The Dark Eidolon and Other Fantasies)". Mhhutchins 02:27, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

VoxAquilaThat was a typo. It's fixed.

Synopsis

A synopsis should be an impartial and objective summation (without spoilers) of the work. It shouldn't be a promotional blurb. Please fix the synopsis provided in this title record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:55, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Engines of Desire

Please add the pub format/binding to this record and adjust the Note field, since you've primary verified it. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:30, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Cover image file uploaded incorrectly

This image file was improperly uploaded to the server. It lacks everything that is required for a file to be hosted by the ISFDB. You must wait until a publication is in the databse, and then use the required link to upload the cover image which automatically adds a license tag, a unique filename which matches the tag of the publication record, a link back to the publication record, and placing a link to the artist in their wiki category. I will delete this file after you've read this, and then upload a larger, better version of it obtained from the publisher's website. Remember to never use the upload file link on the ISFDB wiki to upload a file of a publication's cover image. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:46, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. Voxaquila

Ligotti's omnibus

The following changes were made to this record:

  • Publisher's name was changed to "Penguin Books (US)"
  • You added a content record for the OMNIBUS title record which I will remove. A title reference record is automatically generated for every record, so you shouldn't add a new one.
  • An OMNIBUS record requires at least one of these content records: NOVEL, COLLECTION, ANTHOLOGY or NONFICTION. I will add a content title record for the collection Songs of a Dead Dreamer and the novel Grimscribe. And then import the contents of the collection.
  • The foreword was misspelled as "Foreward".

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 17:11, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

BTW, I just discovered that there are two versions of Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and will have to research whether this new Penguin edition includes the original collection or the expanded one. That may have to wait until the book is actually published to confirm. Mhhutchins 17:15, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, I made a mistake. Grimscribe is also a collection. I'll make the changes. Mhhutchins 17:17, 31 August 2015 (UTC) Thanks! Voxaquila

Spirit of the Century Presents: Tales of the Young Centurians

"Spirit of the Century Presents" appears to be a publication series, while "Tales of the Young Centurians" to be a title series. Are you certain that the full name should be a publication series? Mhhutchins 20:37, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Let's make it a title series. Voxaquila

In the Yaddith Time

If this is a single poem, then the publication record should be changed from COLLECTION to CHAPBOOK. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:37, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Done. Voxaquila

Now you need to change the type of the title reference record. That's not done automatically when you change the type of a publication record. Mhhutchins 20:18, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Legal name of Poppy Z. Brite

Hi, I've put your submission on hold as I can find no evidence of change for the legal name, only a preference for the new name. Do you have any further evidence at hand (I only looked at wikipedia)? Thanks, Stonecreek 08:26, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

I don't. Sorry. Voxaquila

SINS & Ashes

Corrected some content of this book from my copy. When these changes are accepted I can also add the page numbers and the correct page count, my copy has 322 pages. MLB 00:48, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

I have added the page numbers and a couple of notes, and changed the page count. Honestly, I often can't tell the difference between avant guard word phrasing for short-shorts, prose poems, and non-metered poetry, so, except for the obvious, I really didn't change any of the content. I'll leave that to more knowledgeable editors. MLB 21:48, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Clash of Star-Kings

Hello, I've approved your submission but had to correct the ISBN-13 to ISBN-10 (the former being in use from 2007 onwards). As the ISBN is quite visible here, please try to use the correct one. Hauck 17:01, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you! Voxaquila

The Night Shop: Tales for the Lonely Hours

Hello,

I accepted your submission and did two small changes:

  • The publisher is recorded in our DB as Cemetery Dance Publications so I adjusted it.
  • When using Amazon covers, remove everything between the name of the file and the extension - Amazon tends to put things like ._200_ and to size the image on their server; we do not need this :) Annie 17:07, 13 March 2018 (EDT)

Thanks! Annie 17:07, 13 March 2018 (EDT)
