- Added a First Printing date column and also did an internal consistency check where I computed the expected "Published" date value and compared it to what has been recorded. About ten rows had minor issues such as "n.d." when the printing date could be stated or a printing date when "n.d." was the correct choice.
- Merged the series names from my old DAW list. About 150 titles picked up series names. The plan here is to keep comparing/merging until no more data can be mined from the old list which has about 5500 rows of publications vs. nearly 2200 rows in the main DAW list.
- Fixed up all of the author names so that they link to ISFDB plus sorted the list by author and started linking up titles. I got mid-way through the letter “C” for now. Thank you Mike – I agree the table is huge and not practical for individual edits and so I've been batching up my updates. I’ve been mulling over ways to deal with this. I have a data-consistency verification pass coming up soon that will be adding many rows to deal with publications at new prices and at that point the table should be stable enough that I can break it into sections for each 100 Logo numbers much like how Steven Silver breaks up his list but in the long run I’d want to drive this off the ISFDB database.

I have a couple of questions about your copy of “The Birthgrave.”

Is the Logo # stated as “154?” The reason I ask is that the 1st through 3rd printing used Logo #154, and then I believe DAW decided to switch Logo #s as they did a new cover as the 4th and 5th printing are Logo # 463. Did DAW switch back to #156 for the 6th printing or am I mistaken and DAW did run two printing tracks (each with their own numbers) for the two logo #s?

The logo on the front says UE1776 and does not quote the 154 number. I can see no trace of the 154 (or 463) anywhere, inside or outside.

Is the copyright year 1975?

Yes; "First printing, June 1975", followed by "6 7 8 9" on the line below.

Is the cover artist George Barr or Ken W. Kelly? (I believe Logo 154 was Barr and 463 was Kelly).

It is credited to Ken W. Kelly internally. I see no signature on the artwork. The picture is of a mostly naked woman standing facing us, on the back of a chariot pulled by two horses, riding away from us. The woman is brandishing a bow; a building is visible behind her and to the right of the picture.

Is the country (at the bottom of the copyright page) U.S.A.?

Thank you Mike. I’ll need to think of a way to make the missing Logo # aspect clearer as Don Erikson also reported books as having Logo #s when they were editions that I did not think had them. A pretty common DAW practice for later printings was to move the Order # into the yellow logo box in the spot where the Logo # normally goes and as far as I know, the Logo # can't be determined from the book itself. I’m assuming there was a technical reason for doing this such as it was easy to erase lettering from the cover artwork and hard to put new lettering on. As DAW wanted the Order # on the cover they dropped the Logo #.

One question I forgot to ask – I assume yours is one of the old style publications with the yellow spine? It looks like UE1776 was published around Oct or Nov 1982 and DAW did not switch to the new style until mid-1984.

You had listed the cover artist as Michael Whelan but I had Victoria Poyser which lead to the hunt. Amazon has a decent image of what you have and when I saw the picture I went “oh!” because take a look at Hags, Sirens, and Other Bad Girls of Fantasy which is also by DAW. DAW did make book club editions but don't know if they sold them directly or though a BOMC. I got confused by the AbeBook Seller listings that as several sellers of the hardcover did not state they were selling book club editions though some did. I'm guessing the sellers either did not recognize them as BCE/BOMC or did not know you are supposed to include that in the listing. One seller stated “Book Club Edition, 1st and Only hard cover Edition” but I don't know if that "1st and only" is something from the book or something the seller figured out. The cover images are very "book club" in their styling (no DAW logo, no price or other identification, etc.) and I would have to guess all of the hardcovers are book club editions. Adding the extra questions from above: it's a first printing, apparently, but gives no "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9". Copyright date is 1983.

Thank you Mike - the lack of a printing # line is pretty unusual. A number of AbeBook sellers state "1st printing" but I don't know if they guessed that or if DAW created versions with 123456789. One seller has a 2nd printing. Marc Kupper 03:18, 4 Dec 2006 (CST)
