Welcome!

Hello, Martyhalpern, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

Welcome again and thanks for submitting this classic! However, there are some problems that need to be solved before accepting your submission: If you like to stay and contribute further we best go through the points step by step (if not, I'll just modify your input to meet the standards of ISFDB). Two points I'd like to mention/ask in every case: you added a personal note, we try to state notes in a neutral way. The second point is a question: Amazon states a price of $2.05, instead of $1.99. Do you know something about the background of this difference? Thank you again for contributing! Stonecreek 16:30, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I must apologize as I'm not familiar with adding material to the db. I just filled in the blanks and felt an explanatory note was necessary since I wasn't the owner, per se, of the book. As to price, I just checked Amazon.com and the price listed is $1.99 -- not sure why you saw $2.05.

Since I have your attention: Is this where I could request corrections to the overall listing for Judith Moffett? For example, under Fiction Series, the correct title of the series is "Holy Ground Trilogy" not "The Ragged World." Also, under that series, there are two additional stories that are part of that series: "The Bear's Baby" (2003) and "The Bird Shaman's Girl" (2007) -- these two stories are listed under "Shortfiction" but they belong to the Holy Ground Trilogy.

Judith also has a brand new story that is currently appearing on Tor.com entitled "Space Ballet."

Any questions, I'll try to check back again, but an email, at least for me, would be best. Is there a way I can set up a notification that if a msg appears here for me that I get notified via email?

Thanks again. Appreciate your assistance -- and patience. Cheers, Martyhalpern 00:49, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your fast answer. Please state your email address here or on your user page and we can communicate that way.
Ha! Found it in your submission, sorry.
I'll accept and modify your submission. It's better to leave a field blank than to add anything (finding 'n/a' in the publication series field the software automatically generates a new publication series with the name 'n/a').
I'm afraid that the cover image probably needs to be uploaded, we don't deep-link to other sites ('stealing' from their bandwidth), except we have explicit permission for it.
Re: Holy Ground Trilogy. It would seem that this could be the title for the three novels, but there's shortfiction under the series titel as well. Maybe Holy Ground Trilogy could be made into a sub-series of The Ragged World?
Finally, adding this as CHAPTERBOOK was absolutely right. However, the novella had to be added as content item. This is different from entering a novel; it's best to view a CHAPTERBOOK as a kind of COLLECTION, which may additional Content such as interior art or essays, but only one shortfiction. Thanks, Stonecreek 07:45, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll try to explain about the Holy Ground Trilogy: Yes, the three novels make up the trilogy. All the listed stories plus the two I specified above were all extracted from the three novels to be standalone stories, all published in magazines. So though they don't add to the trilogy, per se, they are of the trilogy, if that makes any sense.

Also, I didn't realize the fields in the form would actually create an entry (i.e. my use of "n/a") without any human intervention. I expected some moderator to review the entry before it became fact, so to speak, which is why I entered a personal note as well.

So, "Tiny Tango" the original story, and TINY TANGO the ebook I just provided information on, is one and the same and was basically chapter 3 (with modifications to stand alone, of course) in THE RAGGED WORLD. Not sure how this should be entered; I'll leave that up to you.

Therefore "Chapbook" may not be the correct form, because this is not a "collection" but rather a single story, albeit a long one. Cheers, martyh 23:14, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Well, that is exactly for what CHAPTERBOOK is exclusively used here at ISFDB. It is only needed to enter the SHORTFICTION as actual content entry as well. I hope the form the entry has now is to your liking as well. I'll rename the series to your proposed Holy Ground Trilogy. By now, I knew only some of the shortfictions, I think I have to change that. Thanks for your patience and the explanation. Stonecreek 18:25, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
I've moved the synopsis from the CHAPTERBOOK title record to the SHORTFICTION title record, per ISFDB standards. Mhhutchins 02:33, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Because the ASIN is neither the ISBN nor a publisher's catalog number, I've moved it to the Note field of the publication record, per ISFDB standards. Can you confirm that Amazon is the publisher or just the distributor of the ebook version? If the latter, it should not be given as the publisher in the record's Publisher field. Thanks. I'm hoping this is the last entry you'll need from me. I appreciate all your help with the ISFDB standards -- so however your feel is the best way to enter the data, well, go for it. I'm doing this for Judith Moffett because she is even less computer savvy than I am! And yes, Amazon is the ebook publisher because I used their Digital Services to actually create the ebook.

Now, do I understand that you still need a graphic of the cover art? Can you not snag it from the Flickr link I included in the form? It's my account and Judith has the rights to use the artwork. martyh 03:10, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Is the cover image on Amazon which I linked to the record correct? If so, there's no need to link it to Flickr, which BTW isn't allowed. We "deep-link" to another server in order to display the cover image, and some websites don't want others to steal their bandwidth. Amazon doesn't mind. You could also snag the image file and upload it to the ISFDB server using the "Upload New Cover Scan" link at the bottom of the publication record's metadata section. The file can not be larger than 150 kb, and the image can not be more than 600 pixels tall. Mhhutchins 03:20, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
As a side note, have you been able to go through our records for Golden Gryphon Press to determine if any changes or corrections are needed? Almost all of them are primary verified (meaning the data came from the actual copies), but there are a few that need to be verified. (Of course, I'm assuming here that you are the Marty Halpern.) Mhhutchins 03:24, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I am that "Marty Halpern" -- and we've met as well, Michael, virtually speaking that is, when I was working on the 2 Michael Bishop collections for Golden Gryphon, if you recall. Anyhow, l can upload a thumbnail of the Tiny Tango cover but, alas, I checked out the entry and did not find a link or tab to the metadata. Sorry. You'll have to help me out here.

I can check on the Golden Gryphon data, but have only been in contact with the publisher, Gary Turner, maybe twice since leaving at the end of 2007. Aside from Gary, though, I probably know more about the press and authors than anyone else. I'll add it to my list of things but please give me some time: I have some surgery scheduled next week that's going to limit me for a couple weeks after. Anyhow, do you need me to just confirm/verify that thpe data is correct? I see [verified] on a lot of entries. How do I verify something that isn't? And what if I find an error? martyh 00:52, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

It's good to know you're that Marty Halpern!
About uploading a cover image to Tiny Tango: the upload link is the one under the Bibliographic Comments line labeled "Upload new cover scan". But if the image we have from Amazon is the correct one, you don't have to go to the trouble.
About the ISFDB records for Golden Gryphon Press publications: the publications which have been Primary Verified will be indicated in the lower section of the publication record on the "Primary" line of the Verification Status table with the ISFDB editor's user name and a date. (Look at the record I verified of Michael Bishop's Brighten to Incandescence.) It's not likely these verified records will have errors, but if you find any leave a message on my talk page. If the record has not been verified (like this one), you can make any additions or corrections by clicking on the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up to a page where you can edit any field of the record. Just submit the changes and a moderator will look them over and either accept or reject the submission. If he does the latter, he'll let you know why. If you have any questions don't hesitate to post a message on my talk page. (BTW, you must be logged-in to the database to edit it, using the same username and password that you use for this section of the database.)
I hope your surgery goes well and that you'll be up and about shortly after. Looking forward to working with you. Mhhutchins 01:38, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Okay, got it all (I think!)... and since you have a correct graphic of the Tiny Tango cover, then I won't worry about uploading one.

I looked over the Golden Gryphon list; there are quite a few titles that haven't been verified. I'll have to dig out my copies -- won't have time before the surgery, and I won't be able to move any boxes for a few weeks after. So, this will be on my "to do" list, probably after I (finally) get taxes done. (Gawd, I hate taxes!) Cheers, and good chatting with you, Michael. martyh 00:10, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
