The Winston Science Fiction Logo

Description

Artwork

Cover Artwork

Many of these volumes had wraparound artwork which included the Spine as print area for the illustration.

Endpaper Artwork

Most (if not all) of these volumes have the same two page end paper/end pages artwork by Alex Schomburg. (Signature appears below the six-armed, one-eyed robot on the left hand page)

Binding Artwork

Some of these volumes had printed boards which replicated (in line art, not full color) the original cover artwork. Some later reprintings by the combined Holt, Rinehart, Winston Co. only have the rocket on the front board, and the title in the same script font.

Series 'Style'

Color Bar

Most of these volumes has a defined color-bar at the top or bottom of the dust jacket Front and Spine, with "A Science Fiction Novel" and "Winston" on the spine. (Only the last few volumes published had the banner at the top instead of the bottom).

Stylistic Script

Most of these volume have the title displayed in the same 'sweeping' font/script on the dust jacket and presumably the printed boards.

On the spine of every dust jacket, and imprinted on the book itself was the 'Science Fiction' logo.

Artists

  • Alex Schomburg was primary among the cover artists for this series. Not only did he create the end-papers used throughout the series, he also painted 18 of the 37 different covers. Click here to view a gallery of the various Schomburg covers in this series.
