Welcome!

Hello, JVRudnick, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins|talk 20:55, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Pirates

Thanks for adding a record for this work. I had to make a few changes, correcting the format to "tp" (for trade paperback), linking to an authorized website's cover image, and changing the date and price based on the Amazon.com listing. I also had to remove the synopsis because it wasn't the ISFDB standard. It should be a short, objective, impartial, non-spoiler synopsis of the novel. Please feel free to add one that conforms to these standards. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 20:55, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

the thing is - that somehow the dbase includes a book that was never released for publication -- Pirates with a pub date of 2014 was NOT released -- this is an error over at CreateSpace...who I'm told can not "delete" a book -- even though there is no such book yet it shows up as the #1 entry?
Pirates was published in 2015 in August, as an Amazon kindle and a CreateSpace paperback and it is included - so thanks...
But the book with ISBN : 978-1-4700-0983-0 at $9.99 should be deleted here too.... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .
No worries! I have changed the publication date of this ISBN to "unpublished". That way anyone searching for this ISBN will find it and realize that it was "vaporware". Thanks for the clarification! Ahasuerus 18:34, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks SO much... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .
Glad to be able to help! Ahasuerus 21:01, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Concerning the last volume in The RIM Confederacy: I deleted the link to the cover image as we have no allowance to link to the source. If you have the image still at hand, please use the 'Upload cover scan' button.
I also added the US Dollar '$' sign to the price. As we have publications with different currencies, please be sure to add the appropriate sign. Thanks, Stonecreek 08:52, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
I saw that you did the upload and added the image link to the appropriate field in the publication entry. Thanks! Stonecreek 20:12, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

FYI, I have added the Kindle version of the 6th volume to the database. I also noticed that Amazon doesn't seem to list the paperback version. Is it an oversight on their side or is the paperback available for sale elsewhere? Ahasuerus 21:03, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
CreateSpace is now just okaying my proof - so the paperback will not be on the amazon book page for about a week...but thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .
Sounds good -- I will check again in a week or two. Ahasuerus 20:00, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

(unindent) who pays for this whole site and the work done by the Mods etc? Seems like it's costly? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .

All of our editors and moderators are, and have always been, volunteers. This Wikipedia article provides an overview of the site's history. The main server is currently paid for by User:Alvonruff. I pay for the server that hosts our backup files. Ahasuerus 17:06, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
then kudos to you all....this is a great resource...so thanks lads! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .

(unindent) I see that under Pirates - the same incorrect book priced at $9.99 at CreateSpace is still being listed and the cover too...PLEASE delete that - I thought that this was done??? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .

ISBN 978-1-4700-0983-0 is listed as "unpublished" on the title page. The Note associated with the publication record explains that:
  • According to a communication from the author, this was supposed to be a 2014-12-06 release, but the ISBN was canceled. The book was released in 2015 using different ISBNs.
Ahasuerus 20:05, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
and yet it still causes confusion within my readers--they all wonder if this is a real live book etc. Can you not TOTALLY delete this non-book? listing and cover please... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .
Hm, I don't think we have encountered this problem before. Let me post your request on the "Rules and Standards" page to see what other ISFDB editors think about this. Ahasuerus 20:46, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
Based on this discussion we decided to leave the ISBN in the database in order to ensure that users can determine what happened with this ISBN. At the same time we enhanced the ISFDB software to highlight the word "unpublished" -- the results are here and here. I have also added title level notes to clarify the situation.
Hopefully this will provide enough information for our users, but I would also recommend contacting Amazon about removing/correcting their record. We have tens of thousands of users while they have tens of millions, so any inaccuracies in their data are much more likely to cause confusion. Ahasuerus 23:32, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
Amazon will NOT change this -- in fact it does NOT exist on their site but only over on CreatSpace which they own. I have contacted them numerous times over this book which was never written etc - but they always answer the same in that a CS book once listed will NEVER be deleted. That's their policy - so you see this whole issue stops there...
Can I ask nicely that YOU do something? Please change the display for that title to NOT include this book or it's cover - I am so so tired of answering the folks who search CS and ask why they can't buy it...so that'd be help.
Failing that - can I then ask please that you totally delete me from this site - no books listed by me etc etc....as I know that I've already gotten 9 emails from readers asking why they see the book but can't seem to buy it over at CS....rather NOT be on this site than to cause my readers any KIND of confusion....
HELP HERE!!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .

(unindent) THIS I THINK NEEDS AN UPDATE PLEASE??????????????? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JVRudnick (talkcontribs) .

OK, I have changed the cover scan to appear as a raw URL in the Note field. This way anyone who is interested in the original proposed cover can still find it, but it won't appear as an image.
Re: the request to delete the whole bibliography, here is our data deletion policy:
  • Like other major bibliographic sites, the ISFDB doesn't delete publications/titles that are known to have been published.
Our goal is to create a comprehensive and accurate database of speculative fiction and related works. We do our best to make the data as clear as we can, e.g. we have added color-coding to unpublished books based on your feedback, but the core principle remains the same. Ruined Memories

Submission adding a record for this title was accepted, but changes were made for it to comply with ISFDB standards. Those standards are in the help pages which are linked in the Welcome section above. Please take time to look over those pages.

  • Complete date of publication should be given if known. If it isn't stated in the book, then the source of the date should be given in the Note field. I've changed the date to 2016-04-09 based on Amazon's listing.
  • Kindle-formated ebooks don't have "pages" so that field must be left blank. You can give the "print length" in the Note field.
  • Symbols to indicate the currency must be used. So I added "$" to the price field.
  • The link to the cover image file was removed and replaced with the one on Amazon. We must have permission from the web host in order to link to the file on their server, since we are drawing bandwidth from them to display the image.

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 17:20, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
