There Is No Darkness - Haldeman Joe and Jack

Hi, sorry to bother but I need your help in sorting out a situation concerning the Italian version of this pub (primary verifiers of previous edition are not active any more). The source I am using (Fantascienza.com) states that the pub is a collection, listing as contents a prologue by the authors, Starschool, Starschool on Hell, Construct and Springworld. This bibliographic record points out that the novel is a rewrite of the first two novellas, with a third section added. I could not find any sign of the prologue and of the last two shortstories in ISFDB; could you please check if there is any sign of them in the pub ? Thanks --Pips55 21:12, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

The book is constructed as follows : 1)"Prologue" (pages 1-2); 2)"Prospectus and Admission Requirements: The Second Voyage of Starschool" (pages 3-4); 3) "Earth" (pages 5-99); 4) "Hell" (pages 101-183); 5) "Construct" (pages 185-238); 6) "Springworld" (pages 239-245). Each of the last four sections begins with a short item generally titled "Curriculum notes - XXX". As there is no TOC and as copyright page only evokes two novellas already published ("Starschool" & "Starschool in Hell"), it seems to me that the other four parts are original to this fix-up. Can you confirm the publication date given in this record? It's unusual, but not impossible, for a work written in English to first appear in translation. I feel the same. The majority of them contain a single novel along with several short stories. If the short stories had been published collectively and the book is presented as a publication of a collection and a novel, then I would consider it as an omnibus. But one novel plus a few stories do not, in my opinion, constitute an omnibus. I say this knowing full well that under the current rules, it could be typed as an omnibus...but the rules allow for exceptions: A collection such as Robert Heinlein's "The Past Through Tomorrow" should be categorized as a collection, although one of the works is a novel. and it goes on to say The distinction between "Omnibus" and the other types is somewhat subjective and may require discussion and consensus on the publication biblio wiki page. "Nightfall and Other Stories", by Isaac Asimov

In unmerging the French publications from this title, I was uncertain how to handle the 2-volume French version, consisting of Quand les Ténèbres Viendront and L'Amour, Vous Connaissez?. Since you had them together under "Nightfall and Other Stories", it seemed I should keep them together, but it was unclear what title I should use for the pair of those books. I ended up merging the publications together under the title Quand les Ténèbres Viendront, but I'm not confident of that solution. E.g., should those 2 publications be left under separate titles (both as variants of "Nightfall and Other Stories")? Should they be combined under the "invented" title of "Quand les Ténèbres Viendront et Autres Histoires?" I'm hoping you can look at that title and decide what to do about it. May I butt in and offer my support for this suggestion? We should probably formalise the rules for such, I do occasionally find titles where the split publications are left as separate titles but put into the English series with the same series numbers. The Steel, the Mist, and the Blazing Sun - An Analog Book

I've added your verified pub The Steel, the Mist, and the Blazing Sun to the publication series An Analog Book. The first printing of this book includes a small blurb that it is 'An Analog Book' on the front cover, but it doesn't include the stylized 'An Analog Book' logo/header on the cover. Even the small blurb disappears by the second printing (which is the copy in my possession). I only found this through a couple of Abe books listings which mentioned it as being part of the series. I think this completes the "An Analog Book" series... and that's a good thing because a Google search shows that the term is being used now to refer to 'a printed book' aka a 'non-digital/electronic book'. Yes, it's part of my verified pubs where data on interior art is minimal (probably because the issue was already entered and i concentrated my efforts on other areas). The editor, Peter Hamilton, in most of his columns Look Here is credited as "Peter Hamilton, Jr." As far as I know, he used "Peter Hamilton, Jr." only in few early issues. Currently their names are all over the palce, some called "untitled", some "back cover", etc. It makes sense to agree on uniform title. PKD's Metz speech

I've just added a bunch of Paul Williams's newsletters he edited for the Philip K. Dick Society, one of which is If You Find This World Bad, You Should See Some of the Others. It's a transcript in English of the speech he gave at Metz in France in 1977, and Williams's introduction states it first appeared in French in your verified pub L'Année 1977-1978 de la Science-Fiction et du Fantastique, however I don't see it listed there. Do you have your copy to hand? Maybe Williams is mistaken, but it would be good to variant one of Dick's French titles into an English one for once, instead of the other way round... Thanks. Hi, Herve! A couple more questions about Nebula as promised:) 1. The publisher (starting from Number 6) is currently given as Peter Hamilton;Glasgow. I don't see any compelling reason to have Glasgow as part of publisher name in this case and it's also against the current standard.

No problem, you can change it as you see fit (IIRC I've only duplicate what was present), note that there also a "Glasgow" in the first issues publisher's name.

2. In issue 3 the story on p.46 is titled "The Beautiful People" but the artwork on p.54 is titled "The Beautiful Woman". Is that the way it is?

The Metal Man and The Collected Stories of Jack Williamson

I recently acquired the "P/C" edition of Williamson's The Metal Man and Other. While I can't figure out what "P/C" is supposed to stand for (Publisher's Copy?), it is essentially the limited edition, without the numbering or the slipcase. I made several changes to the limited edition before cloning it for the "P/C" and wanted to point them out in case you wanted to apply the same changes to the trade edition. The changes I made are:

1. Added the artwork from the endpapers and plates.
2. Added the frontispiece and limitation page artwork.
3. For the story "The Girl from Mars", I swapped out the full version for the excerpt variant. If you have information that this is really an excerpt, please let me know. It looks to me like it is the full story. Aside from that, the previous variant had the wrong form of Breuer's name
4. For the novel, The Birth of a New Republic, the wrong form of Breuer's name was also listed. I assume with both of these we can go by the author credit in the table of contents, since none of the stories list authors on their title page (as you would expect with a collection).
5. I deleted the "Appendix" essay. There isn't really an essay here, just a table of contents describing what is in the appendix.
6. I removed "The Collected Stories of Jack Williamson, Volume 1" from the publication title.

If you decide to delete your contents and re-import from one of the other editions, you'll want to delete the limitation page artwork, of course.

Regarding the last item, my understanding is that we generally don't include series names as part of the title even when it appears on the title page of the book. I'd like to also delete the series name from the other books in the series where it is still listed on the publication: Wizard's Isle, Spider Island and The Crucible of Power. I don't know why I didn't bring up the first two when I was working on those publications. I'll wait until I hear from you and Rkihara, before I make those changes.

Finally, I also acquired a copy of the trade edition of Crucible of Power and will be adding the artwork on the endpapers. I'll let you know if I come across anything else.

You're probably right for _The girl from Mars_, the text is the same in _The early Williamson_ (albeit without the intermediate titles) and Hauptmann in his Williamson bibliography doesn't mention an abridgement. For the title change (omitting the subtitle), your understanding is probably as good as mine. But as I'm particurlaly fed up with rules ("Record what's on title page", "Don't enter non psec-fic works") and exceptions ("but not all subtitles", "except if author is above a certain threshold") that are strictly dependent on each editor's interpretation, my opinion is that you can do as you please, I've no problem with this. DAW Collectors publication series

I and a couple of other editors are trying to formalize the DAW Collectors Books publication series. The consensus is that we should include only those publications that explicitly list their DAW number, either on the cover, the spine, or the copyright page. This applies to, apparently, all first editions and to some reprint editions, but not to most of the reprints. You have verified several DAW reprint editions where the notes list the DAW number. However, I can't tell from the wording in the notes whether this number is listed because (i) it was actually stated on the book; or (ii) the number was inherited from other editions with the DAW number listed. If you have the time, I would appreciate it if you could check these reprints and when they have the number actually listed, update the notes to reflect that. For example, adding "(on cover)" or "(on copyright page)" to a phrase like "DAW Collectors No. 123". The publications you've verified that fall into this scenario are:

• Resnick and Greenberg's Sherlock Holmes in Orbit, 3rd printing
• Wollheim and Saha's The 1974 Annual World's Best SF, 3rd printing

You verified the hardcover edition of the latest Year's Best Science Fiction, which includes a Peter S. Beagle story. That listing gives the story title as "The Way It All Works Out." But looking at the book's table of contents and the story's title page through an Amazon.com search inside, I see it listed as "The Way It Works Out and All," which would make it a reprint of this story from F&SF. Can you double-check your copy and see how the story is titled? I've left a similar note on Bluesman's talk page, as he is the verifier of the trade paperback edition, which I assume is an identical text in different binding. 1950s UK edition of Galaxy Magazine

I see that you've created records for several issues of this title, several of which aren't dated. In volume three of Tuck's encyclopedia he gives the publication dates for the first 125 issues, although admittedly up through #71 there was no interior-dating. Starting with #10 in January 1954, all issues appeared monthly for the next five years with #72, March 1959 being the last monthly issue. I could scan the pertinent page of Tuck if you'd like. Thanks for bringing this situation to my attention. Even though I made it clear in the note field of the publication record for the English-language edition that these authors only wrote the introductions, I failed to see how looking at the individual records that someone might confuse them for the author of the entire essay. So I disambiguated each of the records by adding "(introduction)" to their title field. I did not add records for the uncredited essays themselves, but when a reliable source determines the actual author, I'll add them (as "uncredited") and then variant them to the author. Thanks. I'm pretty certain that the content listed in this pub record is a "review" of a phantom title by a nonexistent author ("Carlos Orfila Nunez"). It first appeared in the April 1985 issue of Paperback Inferno along with other spoof reviews as an April Fools' joke. I've changed its appearance in the fanzine to an essay to avoid having nonexistent authors in the database. You've unearthted a tricky one. The book is not presented as a collection, there's no toc and no individual copyright for the stories (everything is dated 2006). On title page there is _Africa Zero_ then a succession of _Part X_ (from one to six but never _Africa zero_) then (with the same typeface as _Part X_) _The Army of God and the Sauraman_ (page 92) which can led someone to believe that it's just another part (although named) of the whole (hmm, I hope that I'm clear enough). So I'm not sure if it's a fix-up (I don't know if there are or the extent of possible revisions to _Africa Zero_) or a sloppy assembled collection. Hauck 16:21, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

I'll leave it to you to determine how it should be handled. I just wanted to make sure no one comes along and tries to merge the title novella with the book's title record. From your description, it sounds like a two-novella collection, especially since the chapters of the first part aren't continued into the second part. A "fix-up" wouldn't be so obvious. And I can give you a dozen collections that don't have a table of contents, and Wildside isn't a very precise publisher when it comes to book design and production. On one fan's blog, Asher says it's a publication of the serialized novella plus a "Collector" novella.
