I accepted the change you made in http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?472163 this record], based on your note that you are working from a copy of the book. Unfortunately, if you don't note your source in the record itself, a user (and a future editor and/or moderator) has no idea about the reliability of the data, especially since you removed Amazon as the source. Perhaps you intend to do a primary verification of the record later, but that increases the chances that the record may not be sourced or verified. Please consider doing a primary verification at the time you make an update to a record based on a book in hand. Appreciate it. Mhhutchins 21:25, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Re this record: I changed the "Foreward" to "Foreword". If that wasn't the right thing to do, please change it back and note the odd spelling. Also, please do a primary verification of the record. It would also be nice if you could respond to the messages here so that we know you've located your talk page, and we don't feel like we're posting here for no reason. Thanks. == Year's Best Weird Fiction ==

I'm making a number of changes to Year's Best Weird Fiction. please let me know if you disagree with any of these:
+
#I'm changing the title to "Year's Best Weird Fiction, Volume One" as it appears on the title page.
+
#I'm adding Michael Kelly as a second editor. Both the cover and the copyright statement use both editors. They do both appear on the title page, and I'll note how they are credited in the notes.
+
#I'm changing the publisher to reflect the Undertow imprint.
+
#I'm expanding the notes to indicate the first edition and the Canadian price.
+
#I'm changing the title of the Pulver story to include the ellipses.

This title was already in the database, so you should have gone to its title record and clicked the link "Add Publication to This Title" under the Editing Tools menu. By using the "Add New Novel" which creates not only a new publication record, but a new title record as well. I'll merge the titles as one. Thanks. Also, there was no currency symbol given in the price field. I'm assuming this is US dollars so I added "$" to the field. Mhhutchins 01:57, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Submission adding this record was accepted, but I changed the author credit based on the title you entered it under. If the title page credit is to "Dean Koontz" and not "Dean R. Koontz", the record will have to be unmerged from its current record and merged with the title credited to "Dean Koontz". Also, I zeroed out the date, since the first Berkley printing was in November 1989, a later printing is likely not in the same month. Does your copy have either a number line or a printing statement? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 05:05, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Providing sources
When you're updating a publication record, and not doing a primary verification of it, you must provide the source for the data in the record's Note field. If you have a copy of the publication, doing a primary verification tells the moderator that you have the book and it is the source for the change. Thanks. I returned the source of the data into this publication record. As mentioned above, every record must provide the source of the data. You should only remove the source if you first do a primary verification of the record. Mhhutchins 23:56, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Artist credits from secondary sources and changes to verified publications
+
+
Hi. I have a couple of your submissions on hold that would add artist credits from secondary sources. A few things about those submissions:
+
* When making changes to verified publications, you must notify the verifiers. When making additions (such as in this case), it's usually ok to notify them in parallel with making the submission. When altering something that's already there, you should ask first and only submit if you get agreement from the verifier(s).
+
* When you use information from a secondary source -- something other than what's in/on the publication itself -- you must document that source in the pub notes. Providing information in the Note to Moderator is helpful, but does not leave a permanent record, so it can't be used to document anything. What would result if I accepted these submissions as-is is that we'd have publications with notes saying "Artist not credited; no visible signature" but then having an artist credit anyway, with no explanation.
+
* I am not doubting the Darrell K. Sweet credit for Red Planet, but I don't know that http://sciencefictiongallery.tumblr.com is an authoritative source. I am going to see if I can track down something that is authoritative.
+
No need for you to do anything. I will move the information from the notes to the moderator to the pub notes, and I am going to ask Willem about both covers anyway, so I'll take care of notifying the verifiers. Just something to keep in mind for next time. Thanks. --MartyD 13:12, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

:Breaking news on the Red Planet/Darrell K. Sweet front. With the identification you found as a clue, I was able to get Willem to confirm that that particular cover appears in his verified 258100. That's pretty authoritative. I've accepted both submissions and adjusted the pub notes. Thanks for the detective work. --MartyD 20:50, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi. What is the source of the McFerrin cover art credit you want to add to The Islanders? I don't see credits in the Look Inside, and you did not add anything to the pub notes to identify the source. Thanks. --MartyD 13:01, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

David R. Bunch in The Big Book of Science Fiction
Hi. You recently made a submission which added three stories by David R. Bunch to The Big Book of Science Fiction but you didn't add a note where this information comes from. Do you have a copy? If not the data source should be added as a note because the publisher's website currently mentioned in the note still only lists "Three from Moderan" by David R. Bunch but not the three titles you added. Another, more general thing regarding your submussion: the three stories you have added already existed in the database before. In such a case it's usually a lot easier to import the existing titles. If you add titles for existing titles the way you did there will be duplicate records for the same title in the database. These duplicates now have to be merged into one record. Jens Hitspacebar

Hi. I reverted the page count change you made for 607017 because you didn't provide a data source and neither Amazon nor the publisher's website state the page count you provided. == A batch of nongenre stories - if you disagree please comment ==
+
+
Currently there are numerous non-genre horror stories that are in the database because it's natural to just enter a book of horror or "tales of terror" without figuring out which stories are supernatural. I don't intend to systematically hunt for them, but when I spot one, I like to mark it nongenre. (In the case of classic stories, marking is better than removing it from the database because it'll just get re-added with some new anthology.) At the moment, I've spotted the following stories that I think need such a change, and I'm consulting people who have them in their verified pubs.
+
+
Firstly, there's Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural (verified copies: (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7)), which contains "A Terribly Strange Bed," "The Three Strangers," "The Most Dangerous Game," "Leiningen Versus the Ants," "A Rose for Emily," "Taboo," and undoubtedly other non-supernatural ones that I'm not noticing at the moment. Here are verified publications for those and some other stories:
+
* "Taboo" by Geoffrey Household - An eastern European community is terrorized by a series of murders. The mystery is solved, but the terror, and other psychological effects, linger on. I approved your submissions to remove the wrongly named essay and add a new one instead. This achieved what you wanted to do but it required a few more steps after that(for example merging your new essay to the other record in the other three publications. Hi, I've put your submission for 643049 on hold because your data changes are not consistent with the data source stated in the note (Amazon). If you don't want to do that, please provide another data source which state the page count and the cover artist you want to add. : Why can't you simply answer the questions asked here, instead of making the submission I've put on hold a second time? The usual process for submissions on hold is that there's a discussion on the editor's talk page (which is the page you're currently viewing). And after the questions haven been discussed, the submission which is on hold is either approved or rejected by the moderator, depending on the outcome of the discussion. With your second, duplicate submission you bypassed this discussion. This is very uncooperative behaviour. Keep in mind that moderators are doing all this work in their spare time voluntarily, so you should probably start to show at least some respect for this by answering the questions posted here. Welcome!

Hello, Yeahfine, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:16, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Accelerando Cover Artist

I have placed your edit to this pub on hold. There are two issues:

 1. When modifying a primary verified publication, you need to notify the primary verifiers.
 2. Frangie is the jacket designer per the verifiers' notes. Designer and artist are not the same roles. We will sometimes credit the designer if there is not an actual artist, but the notes also contain a corporate credit for the photo.

Please notify the other verifiers and gain agreement on this change. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 12:30, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

As it's been several days without a response, I have rejected the edit. -- JLaTondre (talk) 02:35, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

The White People by Machen

I've changed the publication date of this record from December 2011 to "0000-00-00" which is displayed as "unknown". It is not likely that a fifth printing appeared in the same month as the first printing. If the printing date is not explicitly stated or there is no reliable secondary source that provides that date, the field should be entered as described. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 00:25, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said Cover Art

I have your edit to Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said on hold. As previously mentioned to you, when changing a publication that has been primary verified, you need to notify the primary verifier. Please do so. Also, are you basing this edit on the publication or a secondary source? If a secondary source, it needs to be stated in the notes. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 23:59, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

I found a source for your addition of the cover artist. As such, I've accepted the submission, added a note to the pub giving the source, and notified the primary verifier. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:42, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Saguaro Riptide

I have rejected your change of Saguaro Riptide to make the cover artist George Long instead of George Long (artist). When there are multiple people with the same name, it is necessary to disambiguate the names. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:54, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Changing data in verified publications

Hi. When you want to make changes to publications having one or more Primary verifiers (you'll see the list at the bottom of the publication details screen, before you click on Edit), ISFDB protocol is to communicate with the verifier(s). If you are going to alter any of the information that's present, you should ask first (post a note on the verifier's talk/discussion page), before submitting the change; sometimes differences end up indicating different editions/printings. If you are going to add information, it is ok to submit the change and concurrently notify the verifier(s) that you have done so. Some folks post special notification instructions at the top of their talk pages, in which case you should follow whatever they say (including "don't bother notifying me"). So I have put your proposed artist name change to The Flies of Memory on hold while confirming that change with the verifiers. Once one of them concurs, I will accept that submission. Thanks. --MartyD 11:40, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

One of the verifiers confirmed, so I accepted your submission. I also adjusted the notes a little further, removing Locus1 as source of the artist credit and noting Locus1's error in the name. Thanks. --MartyD 10:39, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

The Time Traveler's Almanac

I was forced to reject the submission to update this record, because you'd made submissions in some of the content records which had not been approved before you made this submission to edit the publication record. If you're making changes (especially merges) of content records, you must wait until those submissions are accepted before making a submission to edit a publication record which contains those contents. When title records are merged, the record of one disappears from the system, so that a moderator doesn't have the ability to accept a submission to update a publication containing that missing record. Now that I've accepted the merges, you can make an update to the publication record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:13, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

A Season in Carcosa

Just to let you know that I have approved the addition of A Season in Carcosa with one modification. As per Help, "Name suffixes should be separated from the last name by a comma and a space", so I have changed "Joseph S. Pulver Sr." to "Joseph S. Pulver, Sr." Everything else looks good, thanks!

Now that the submission has been approved, would you like to add the contents as well? Ahasuerus 02:33, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

It Came From the North: An Anthology of Finnish Speculative Fiction

Now that the submission has been approved, would you like to add the contents of this anthology? I can see the table of contents via Amazon's Look Inside, but we go by the title page of each story, which can be subtly different, so it's usually best for the book's owner to enter the data. TIA! Ahasuerus 11:43, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

A Season in Carcosa

According to the Amazon "Look Inside", the introduction of this anthology is titled "This Yellow Madness". If it's the same in your verified record of the print edition, please update the title record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:13, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Responding to messages left on your talk page

I'm holding your submissions in the hope that you'll eventually find this page, your talk page, which contains messages from moderators and other editors, some of which need a response.

To respond to a wiki posting, you must first be logged-in, using the same username and password for editing the database. Then click on the "[edit]" link to the right of the posting. Enter your response in the dialogue box which opens. Start your message with a colon (:) which separates and indents it from the previous message making it easier to follow the discussion. In successive messages, add another colon to the number in the previous message. End your entry with four tildes (~~~~), which will automatically "sign" and date your message. Then click the "Save page" button. When someone has left a message on your talk page, you will be notified by a highlighted "My Messages" link when you log into the ISFDB. I have placed a "Watch" on your talk page so that I will be notified when you respond. Keep all discussions on the same page on which it began. Do not respond on the other person's talk page.

Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 15:20, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Replacing source note

The Madness of Cthulhu

Re this record: I changed the "Foreward" to "Foreword". If that wasn't the right thing to do, please change it back and note the odd spelling. Also, please do a primary verification of the record. Year's Best Weird Fiction

I'm making a number of changes to Year's Best Weird Fiction. please let me know if you disagree with any of these:

 1. I'm changing the title to "Year's Best Weird Fiction, Volume One" as it appears on the title page.
 2. I'm adding Michael Kelly as a second editor. Both the cover and the copyright statement use both editors. They do both appear on the title page, and I'll note how they are credited in the notes.
 3. I'm changing the publisher to reflect the Undertow imprint.
 4. I'm expanding the notes to indicate the first edition and the Canadian price.
 5. I'm changing the title of the Pulver story to include the ellipses.

Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 02:15, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Cisco's The Divinity Student

This title was already in the database, so you should have gone to its title record and clicked the link "Add Publication to This Title" under the Editing Tools menu. By using the "Add New Novel" which creates not only a new publication record, but a new title record as well. I'll merge the titles as one. Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:48, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Also, there was no currency symbol given in the price field. I'm assuming this is US dollars so I added "$" to the field. Mhhutchins 01:57, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

I added a note about the source of the price and publication date, as well as a content record for the introduction and a link to the cover image on Amazon. Mhhutchins 01:59, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Midnight by Koontz

Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:33, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Nexus

I returned the source of the data into this publication record. As mentioned above, every record must provide the source of the data. You should only remove the source if you first do a primary verification of the record. Mhhutchins 23:56, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Artist credits from secondary sources and changes to verified publications

Hi. I have a couple of your submissions on hold that would add artist credits from secondary sources. A few things about those submissions:

 • When making changes to verified publications, you must notify the verifiers. When making additions (such as in this case), it's usually ok to notify them in parallel with making the submission. When altering something that's already there, you should ask first and only submit if you get agreement from the verifier(s).
 • When you use information from a secondary source -- something other than what's in/on the publication itself -- you must document that source in the pub notes.
 • I am not doubting the Darrell K. Sweet credit for Red Planet, but I don't know that http://sciencefictiongallery.tumblr.com is an authoritative source. I am going to see if I can track down something that is authoritative.

Breaking news on the Red Planet/Darrell K. Sweet front. With the identification you found as a clue, I was able to get Willem to confirm that that particular cover appears in his verified Beyond Fantasy: The Art of Darrell K. Sweet. That's pretty authoritative. I've accepted both submissions and adjusted the pub notes. Thanks for the detective work. --MartyD 20:50, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Source of artist credit for The Islanders

Hi. What is the source of the McFerrin cover art credit you want to add to The Islanders? I don't see credits in the Look Inside, and you did not add anything to the pub notes to identify the source. Thanks. --MartyD 13:01, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Cover artist for Captain of the 'Pole Star'

I added Paul Lowe as the cover artist for your verified Captain of the 'Pole Star' based on the cover art copyright credit I found in the Look Inside. The art also matches the 2004 edition, credited to Lowe. --MartyD 11:46, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

A batch of nongenre stories - if you disagree please comment

Currently there are numerous non-genre horror stories that are in the database because it's natural to just enter a book of horror or "tales of terror" without figuring out which stories are supernatural. I don't intend to systematically hunt for them, but when I spot one, I like to mark it nongenre. (In the case of classic stories, marking is better than removing it from the database because it'll just get re-added with some new anthology.) At the moment, I've spotted the following stories that I think need such a change, and I'm consulting people who have them in their verified pubs.

Are there any of those stories you think ARE genre? Vasha 15:28, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Cast of Characters (The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O)

Hello,

I approved your submissions to remove the wrongly named essay and add a new one instead. This achieved what you wanted to do but it required a few more steps after that(for example merging your new essay to the other record in the other three publications. For future references, when you find a typo like that that is obviously a type and cannot be like that in the book, the fastest way to fix it is to go to the essay record (here and just submit a name change for that only. :) Annie 14:48, 23 June 2017 (EDT)

Ready Player One

I approved your update. Is the copy that you have the same publication or one with the same cover? If it is the same, do you plan to verify it? If not, a note saying which publication the cover artist is credited in (or even a generic "Cover artist from a different publication with the same cover") will be appreciated. Thanks! Selecting a Ghost

You have "Selecting a Ghost" in your verified publication The Captain of the 'Pole-Star' as a novelette; if it is the same as this online text, it is a short story. In that case, please correct it. Thanks Vasha 18:22, 9 September 2017 (EDT)

nongenre stories in The Captain of the Pole-Star

I have identified, so far, three non-genre stories in your verified publication The Captain of the 'Pole-Star': Weird and Imaginative Fiction. They are "The Blood-Stone Tragedy" (insane man believes he is a Druid who needs to commit human sacrifice, based on an actual case), "A Pastoral Horror" (another homicidal maniac), and "The Lord of Chateau Noir" (French lord takes creative revenge on German officer after his son dies in war). Do you disagree that these are non-speculative? And should I notify you of any others that I find? --Vasha 21:34, 19 November 2017 (EST)

Dark State

Hi, I've put your submission for Dark State on hold because your data changes are not consistent with the data source stated in the note (Amazon). As it looks like you own the book or have a physical copy at hand you may consider to primary verify the publication. If you don't want to do that, please provide another data source which state the page count and the cover artist you want to add. Otherwise the current data source is assumed to be correct and I'd have to reject your submission. Thanks. Jens Hitspacebar 18:08, 12 January 2018 (EST)

Why can't you simply answer the questions asked here, instead of making the submission I've put on hold a second time? The usual process for submissions on hold is that there's a discussion on the editor's talk page (which is the page you're currently viewing). And after the questions haven been discussed, the submission which is on hold is either approved or rejected by the moderator, depending on the outcome of the discussion. With your second, duplicate submission you bypassed this discussion. This is very uncooperative behaviour. Keep in mind that moderators are doing all this work in their spare time voluntarily, so you should probably start to show at least some respect for this by answering the questions posted here. I've approved the submission now since you've now primary-verified it. Jens Hitspacebar 14:46, 13 January 2018 (EST)

Dark State

I added a cover scan and several notes to your verified pub. Bob 18:01, 13 January 2018 (EST)

The Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirty-Fifth Annual Collection

Hello,

As you removed the "From Amazon" message from The Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirty-Fifth Annual Collection, please do not forget to add the content and verify the book! (or at least verify - my copy is probably in my mailbox as we speak so I or someone else will add the content soon-ish). :) Annie 17:03, 3 July 2018 (EDT)

Valuta sign

Hi, can you add the valuta sign before the price of your last two submissions? And, to save work, when entering a publication which title is already in the database, use "Add Publication to This Title" from the menu please (so you would start here for a new publication of 'Praxis').--Dirk P Broer 06:45, 6 August 2018 (EDT)

Dear Yeahfine: Make that by now the last *three* submissions. Next submission that has no valuta sign and that makes a new title record for an existing title will be rejected fortright.--Dirk P Broer 15:46, 6 August 2018 (EDT)

Xeelee: Redemption

Hello, it seems we entered the same pub at about the exact same time. Can you confirm yours is also first printing by number line? Thank you! MagicUnk 09:13, 8 September 2018 (EDT)

Infinity's end: Story lengths

Thank you for verifying this book. Do you think you'll be able to figure out the lengths of the stories? It is very useful to have that data (some of the stories in the volume are sure to be award-nominated, so people will be consulting us to find out what category to nominate in). --Vasha (cazadora de tildes) 17:27, 11 September 2018 (EDT)

Infinity's End

You marked Infinity's End verified; have you had a chance to compare your copy with what's in the database yet? Because the table of contents shown here is quite different from what Amazon preview and other sources indicate; most notably, they say there's another story, "Cloudsong" (a novelette) by Nick Wolven. Could you check that? Thanks. --Vasha (cazadora de tildes) 15:47, 12 November 2018 (EST)

Ark

If you have a copy of the ebook, consider verifying this. Transient if it is from Prime reading, Permanent if you actually got it :) Annie 18:52, 8 October 2019 (EDT)

Shadows of War

Hello. I've put your submission on hold as you haven't added any contents to the collection (the individual story titles). As without the contents this would be an incomplete, primary-verified publication, I'd have to reject your submission. To prevent this, can you please provide the individual story titles by responding here? (to respond, use the 'edit' on the right, next to the title). Thanks you. Regards, MagicUnk 17:20, 13 January 2020 (EST)

Hello. After feedback elsewhere, I've reconsidered and approved your submission (and corrected a small error). Please consider adding the contents, as well as a note of what source the price and date are from? (Amazon has $2.99 as opposed to your $7.99) Thank you! MagicUnk 11:49, 15 January 2020 (EST)
I just added 5 stories; other 6 are not on ISFDB and may be original or non-genre. --Username (talk) 13:06, 14 July 2023 (EDT)
I added the others from Look Inside and a note that the contents have not been verified. --MartyD (talk) 06:47, 29 August 2023 (EDT)

The Big Book of Modern Fantasy

Thanks for submitting the ebook version of The Big Book of Modern Fantasy! I have approved the submission, but then I changed the ISBN value from 9780525563860 (the ISBN of the paperback edition) to 9780525563877 as per Amazon's Look Inside. Could you please confirm that it matches what's in your ebook? TIA! Ahasuerus 20:12, 28 July 2020 (EDT)

The Big Book of Modern Fantasy 2

I took the liberty of importing the contents to your verified ebook edition of this anthology. Please let me know if you find any issues with the contents. I'll also note that the cover of the paper edition did not match the scan from Amazon as it lacked the green bar at the bottom of the cover. You may want to double check your copy to see if the image is correct. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 19:46, 12 August 2020 (EDT)

The Big Book of Modern Fantasy

Regarding this submission: That story is already in the publication with that same title and author credit. As your note to the moderator says "remove tooltip", I'm assuming you mean the tooltip on the canonical name (Михаил Булгаков). That tooltip is unrelated to the author credit and is from the parent canonical author name. We transliterate non-Latins names. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:48, 17 August 2020 (EDT)

Madball by Fredric Brown

I added a few publishing details to your verified copy of Madball. MLB 22:02, 9 April 2021 (EDT)
